This week at NetApp Insight in Las Vegas, Syncsort launched its new ECX Enterprise Catalog software. The response has been nothing short of amazing!
In conversation after conversation I’ve listened to NetApp engineers and NetApp partner engineers describe long standing data management challenges that they haven’t been able to solve – until now.
In short, IT needs a catalog, and Syncsort is the first company to provide a catalog that’s scalable enough, powerful enough and smart enough to give users what they need to handle the avalanche of unstructured data. A seemingly simple question – where is this file located? – becomes an IT nightmare in the face of millions and even billions of files, distributed across dozens or even hundreds of devices, and thousands of volumes. It can take days to find things. Sometimes organizations don’t even try because they just don’t have the time to spare.
Now with Syncsort ECX, you can find a specific file among billions in literally a couple of seconds: as much time as it takes to type in the file name and hit enter. That’s it!

I want to close with one comment on scalability. There are other products out there that catalog file data, but they are built on rusty old plumbing using outdated software designs. I was talking to an engineer for a major financial company and he said his customer had looked at one of these other products. I opined that “the problem with that product is that it can’t scale.” And then as a joke I said, “They would probably need a hundred servers.” He responded quite seriously, “They already did those calculations. It was more than a hundred servers.”
Well Syncsort ECX could handle that job with one server! That’s the difference.
